Chief Crocodile

What is a chief like?
a chief is like a crocodile
let loose in a market
mouth watering for others’ goods

chief in his khaki
chief with his guards
chief with his greed
his belly large
like a yawning chasm

chief is like a wild dog
who eats the lion’s leftovers
or like a vulture who
cannot tell the difference
between a meat feast
and the meat of a dead dog
run over by a car.
