Translator's notes

As Birds Fly Unhindered

By ARIANE DREYFUS

Like the other translators I chose to retain the form and the initial capitala. 'Considers' seeks to convey a concentrated attention. 'Gown' because she is a princess. Because 'embetante' is colloquial and the next line is hard to translate elegantly I have opted for 'Sissies' for 'frileux'. This also perhaps reinforces her 'little girl' point of view. 'Elles se tordent a plein de reflets' and 'sol intouche' gave me most trouble. Whether the ambiguity in the last line is intended or not it was this that made me want to tackle the rest of the poem.
