Hansel's Language

By Ida Vitale

The poems here belong to Vitale’s latest book, Mella y criba (Valencia: Pre-textos, 2010). They complement the anthology that appeared in the Earthworks Series of Latin American Poetry in Translation we edit for Salt Publishing, Garden of Silica (2010). Once more, we have translated as a team because we believe that in this way we can achieve the minimum essential for such a complex activity. In this case, it is not only a deep knowledge of both Spanish and English, but above all, of societies and cultures from the Hispanic and English-speaking worlds. For us, what is most important is to not betray a poetry that ultimately offers one of the most provocative representations of women’s subjectivity in the Spanish language.
