Michael Hofmann was born in 1957 in Freiburg, Germany and came to England in 1957. Since reading English and researching at Cambridge University, from 1983 he has worked as a freelance writer: editing, reviewing, translating over forty works from the German including Ashes for Breakfast by Durs Grünbein, and publishing four prize-winning collections of poems,including Approximately Nowhere (Faber 1999).
