IVAN V. LALIĆ was born in Belgrade, the Serbian and Yugoslav capital, in 1931. Though he is now celebrated as one of Serbia’s best twentieth-century poets, Lalić regarded himself not just as a Serbian or a Yugoslav poet, but also – primarily, even – as a Mediterranean poet. He died in Belgrade in 1996.
