Euphrase Kezilahabi

Poet

Euphrase Kezilahabi is a major figure in Swahili literature, a pioneering author of fiction – where his celebrated novels move from social realism into post-modernism – and poetry. He was born in 1944 in Ukerewe, Tanzania ( then Tanganyika ) and came of age in the newly independent nation. From the publication of his first poetry collection in 1974, he has been centrally responsible for introducing free verse into Swahili. He is a professor at the University of Botswana.
