ERNESTO CARDENAL was born in 1925 and has served both as a Catholic priest and Minister of Culture in his native Nicaragua. He has published many collections of poetry and has won many prizes for his poetry. His political engagement, interest in the indigenous people of the region and his Christianity have all featured heavily in his work.
