Anne Stevenson

Translator, Poet

I am an Anglo-American poet, born in England of American parents in 1933, educated in the United States, though I have lived in Britain for more than forty years.

I've published translations with PiT - poems by Eugene Dubnov, a Latvian poet who writes in Russian and who lives in Israel. Since I have no Russian, I have relied on his cribs and then worked carefully with him to make an English poem out of his Russian ones.

My own Poems 1955–2005 were published by Bloodaxe Books in 2006. Stone Milk appeared in 2007, a year in which I was awarded prizes from the Lannan Foundation in New Mexico and the American Poetry Foundation. My Selected Poems, chosen and introduced by Andrew Motion, was published by The Library of America in 2008. I have also written two books on the Poetry of Elizabeth Bishop and a biography, Bitter Fame, of Sylvia Plath.
