Synopsis

1 Year Subscription to Modern Poetry in Translation by Helen Constantine, David Constantine

When Ted Hughes and Daniel Weissbort founded MPT in 1966 they had two principal ambitions: to publish poetry that dealt truthfully with the real contemporary world, and to benefit writers and the reading public in Britain and America by confronting them with good work from abroad.

The new editors of MPT continue in that tradition. The real circumstances of the world have changed, but they are every bit as pressing as they were when the magazine began. And as the English language marches towards an apparent hegemony, the need for its readers and writers to be confronted by what is foreign, is greater still.

We are on the look-out for good translations of good poety from anywhere in the world. More particularly, for our next few issues, we want translations, original poems and short essays that will address such characteristic signs of our times as exile, the movement of peoples, the search for asylum, the speaking of languages outside their native home. We want a living connection with the past also. The 'modern' in the magazine's title is in no sense restrictive. It is as necessary that we deal with the foreign country of the past as it is that we deal with what is beyond our frontiers now. All lively translations, that work in the language of today, are to be considered modern.
